KL SAC Opening Ceremony 30.10.10

TMD Hakim and Kim

At the KL Semi Annual Convention (KL SAC) held on 29 – 31 Oct 2010, our very own Kim Chow of Friendship Toastmasters Club was one of the Toastmaster of the Day (TMD) for the Opening Ceremony. Both Kim and Hakim Hamzah, who is also Division P Governor, were gorgeous in their Baju Kurung and Baju Melayu.

Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon arriving at the Convention

With the arrival of our guest of honour, Yang Berhormat Senator Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, the opening ceremony started off with an Invocation Speech by DTM Sukhdev Singh. Elaborating on the hypnotic power of words, he asked us to think before we speak, because how we say or what we say can either help or hinder, inspire or injure, heal or hurt.

Organising Chair of KL SAC, NJ Singam, who is also the current Division G Governor, was certain that with our enthusiastic participation, this will be a momentous, memorable and magnificent convention. He thanked his team of 22 Committee members, 78 sub-committee members for their unwavering dedication, hard work and untiring effort to make this Convention a reality.

He also shared with us a heartening story of the KL SAC team’s target of signing up 300 participants. Three weeks ago, this target was achieved. They set a new target, a magical number of 333. As of 29 Oct morning, it was 330 participants. Then at 8.47 PM in the evening, 4 gentlemen from Thailand walked in and the final tally for KL SAC was 334 participants !

DG Thanni delivering his District address

For his District address, District Governor DTM Thanni spoke of the immense growth in District 51. At one time, the largest District in the world, District 51 has given birth to two other Districts i.e. District 80 and most recently District 87. With 230 clubs, 5000 members and 12 Divisions, District 51 is proud that currently two Malaysians are serving as District Governors (District 51 and 87) and perhaps next year, there will be two Malaysian contestants at the World Public Speaking Championship.

DG Thanni imparted this message, “Nothing is impossible, nothing is perfect. Be prepared for life’s challenging moments by exploring options and solutions will appear.”

TMD Kim introduced Dr. Koh as a humorous speaker and a diligent Cabinet Minister. Dr Koh’s keynote speech was a testament of his humorous speaking skills. Not only that, he had also done his research as his speech was full of facts about District 51.

He praised the Toastmasters program for fostering friendship and fraternity. Volunteerism combined with a good programme in training and self-development is the best programme for learning and leading a meaningful life. He then joked that if he had joined Toastmasters, he would have been a better politician.

He ended his speech with this message, “You may listen and think all the time, but if you don’t speak, no one will know what you think.”

Dr. Koh officiating the opening ceremony by hitting the gong 3 times

In a first for our District 51 conventions, we then had a Skype session with District 40 who is coincidentally having their Fall Convention. With the aid of modern technology, we were connected to Kentucky, USA and were warmly greeted by District 40. It was true what Dr. Koh had just told us - in a more diverse world, we become more unified.

At 10.30 AM, we ended the Skype session. So far it has been an eventful morning, with many more events in store for us for the rest of the day. It would be fair to warn anyone attending future Conventions to be well-rested the day before as one need loads of energy to keep up with the Convention events !

September Club Meetings (Part 2)

Friendship on Tues 21 Sept 2010

For our Good Plans Shape Good Decisions meeting, first-timer TME Vincent
certainly put in a lot of planning and preparation for his role. Each
role-player was given a lavish introduction. There was even humour as he
introduced the Table Topics Session as either purgatory or paradise.

Our Table Topics Master Grace ingeniously put in the words “I resolve” into
each table topic question, placed in a lantern. That ensured that the Word
Of the Day resolve was used at least once by each table topics speaker. The
various speakers who resolved to improve their impromptu speaking skills were
Danniel, Kwok Hung, Ali, Ian and Kim.

Guests Ali & Ian, TME Vincent, Ali and Kwok Hung

As this was a Raya cum Mooncake Festival celebration meeting, the dress code
was green which many members and guests cheerfully and sportingly comply
with.

Kasey as the Toastmaster of the Day, made an impressive effort to share
details about the “Raya” meeting theme, chosen in conjuction with the month
of Syawal which marks the end of the Ramadhan month of fasting.

For our Games Session, we played the Whispering game. The first volunteer
picked up a message from the Games Master and whispered it to the next
person. After the message went around the room, it was hilarious to hear what
the final message turned into!

After the Games Session, everyone was more relaxed and ready for the Table
Topic session. Five people bravely went to the front to give impromptu talks
related to the “Raya” meeting theme. Chee Yoong presented an impressive
speech, starting with a Raya song. He deserved to be the best Table Topic
speaker!

September Club Meetings (Part 1)

Hasil on Fri 3 Sept 2010

Not only did Past President Mustafa dazzled us with his resplendent Baju
Melayu outfit, we were pleasantly surprised by the numerous guests who joined
us.
Members and guests of Hasil Toastmasters Club

In his Presidential speech, Piras explained to us the practical aspect of
the skills he has learnt as a Toastmaster. The preparation for his daily 5
minutes speech to his team members is no longer a mammoth task he struggles
with, thanks to his Toastmasters training.

President Piras delivering his opening speech

In the “Open Evaluation” session, a practice that we have observed from
MAICSA Toastmasters meetings, everyone is provided with the opportunity to
provide feedback, especially those not assigned evaluator roles. Guest Radika
was eloquent and delivered her speech confidently. She certainly has the
makings of an evaluator. We also had constructive feedback from Yoga, Mustafa
and Piras.

Friendship on Tues 7 Sept 2010

For our Enriching Your Life meeting, TME Tony started the evening with an
apt reminder that many of us have become better leaders, managers, salesman,
entrepreneurs and CEOs because of one man – Dr. Ralph C. Smedley. Our lives
have been enriched (Word of the Day) because of our Toastmasters training
programs and the benefits we have gained from it.

In the Evaluation Session, for the first time, we also tried out “Open
Evaluation”. Chee Hoe, Tony and Sivadas took the opportunity to enriched our
meeting with their feedback.

The first Friendship 2010 recipients for the Half-CC Ribbons are Chee
Hoe, Vincent and Alexandra who have completed more than 5 speeches in the
Competent Communication manual. Lay Theng was also awarded an Ice Breaker
ribbon. Well done to our hard-working members who are diligently working on
their CC manuals!

It was a meeting you should not have missed if you wanted to know how to be a
millionaire in 2 years’ time! Krystle shared with us “Learning from T. Harr
Eker” for her Get To The Point speech. It was informative, well-researched
and a subject that everyone was interested in.

We then had the official launching of the E-souvenir book. This impressive collection of Division W’s events and leadership messages was made possible by the collective effort of contributors, editors and reviewers helmed by Lai Chee Yoong of Exact ADC. Many months of effort, toil and relentless dedication by the E-souvenir book team went into producing this slick and superb collection of Division W memoirs for year 2009/2010.

Division W Appreciation Dinner (Part 1)

Division W under the leadership of DTM Soh Fong Wai for term 2009/2010 has been very generous in rewarding every member and club’s achievement. The Appreciation Dinner held on 28 August 2010 at Padi House was another testimony to our Division Governor’s belief that everyone’s contribution and achievement will be recognized and appreciated by Division W.

At Padi House

There could not have been a better way to start off the evening of awards. We were delighted when the Toastmaster of the Evening was announced. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that Stephen Fernando will be our host for this evening where many members and friends of
Division W had gathered.

TME Stephen Fernando

The Humour Session by Stephen Fernando was priceless. We were in constant laughter as he shared with us his memorable experience of travelling to Palm Desert, California to participate in the International Speech Contest Finals with District Governor Thannimalai,
LGET Sue Chan and LGM Ramdas Nayar. His encounter with the Homeland Security officer at the airport, the plane journey, the friendly hugs from African-American female Toastmasters were hilarious tales.
Our laughter continued when we heard tales of our Malaysian football team, the Malay subtitles for our movies and the theme song for Institut Jantung Negara – My Heart Will Go On.
